Calytrix Training Systems (CaTS) Division

Exercise Support Services

Calytrix Training Systems (CaTS) was recently selected as the key provider of exercise support services (ESS) to the Joint Combined Training Capability (JCTC). Calytrix was selected to provide land environmental exercise support and exercise role player support to JCTC supported activities over the next 3-5 years.

Human Terrain and Role Player Support

The provision of human terrain and role player support is a relatively new endeavour for the ADF.

Role players may be required to support individual MREs (both Army and SOTG) and potentially in support of larger single service and joint exercises. The requirement for role players may vary significantly from one activity to the next and a broad range of skills sets is required to ensure the right support is provided to each activity. An understanding of the operating environment and the cultural aspects of the potential scenario location is important. Some activities will require an understanding of simple land based TTP's while others will require specialist skills in the provision of ex 'Special Forces' soldiers. To be truly effective however, role players need to replicate the human terrain of the potential operating environment. This requires the group to look, act and potentially speak like foreign nationals (in the first instance this is most likely to be replicating the conditions of Afghanistan).

Personnel supporting Human Terrain and Role Player support need to be relatively young and fit. The activities can be stressful and arduous, conducted over protracted periods. The conditions may be difficult.

Exercise Support Delivery: Land Environment

For a variety of reasons the ADF is having difficulty meeting its exercise requirements through the provision of uniformed personnel. In order to assist with the shortfall there is often a need to seek the support of external organizations such as Calytrix. The broad and potential scope of land exercise support is yet to be defined but the essence of being able to meet the JCTC's future land exercise support requirements is to have a group with a broad range of skill sets. For the foreseeable future the JCTC is likely to be an exercise enabler rather than being responsible for the planning and delivery of an entire exercise. Calytrix supports the JCTC by potentially providing those skills that 'enable' the conduct of an exercise. This needs to cover a wide spectrum from assisting with the planning of an exercise / activity, assistance with AAR's through to the provision of range sentries and drivers.

Personnel supporting the delivery of exercise support to the land environment will be ex ADF members who are relatively current and retain a passion for supporting the ADF.
